Whilst there are a lot of ready to use watercolour palettes out there, it's always fun to curate your own palette to suit your needs and personal taste. Here are some tips to customise your palette!
Equipment Needed:
- Empty Palette (see below for recommendations!)
- Small spatula or toothpick
- Watercolour paints of your choice (recommendations)
Picking your palette
The size and type of palette you use completely depends on what and where you plan on painting. For example, urban sketchers tend to have smaller compact palettes that are easy to pack and travel friendly. However, if you have a larger working space and don't plan on taking your palette with you, this may give you the freedom to have a larger palette with more colours.
Many art stores have empty watercolour palettes ready to use. Here are my recommendations:
You could also get creative and use an old vintage tin to store your watercolours.
Choosing your colours
I always recommend using a limited colour palette for beginners - its more cost effective and improves your colour theory know-how.
